    The traditional banking system was inherited from the Anglo-Egyptian condominium ( – ). When the National Bank of Egypt opened in Khartoum in , it obtained a privileged position as banker to and for the government, allowing it to operate as a semiofficial central banks followed, but the National Bank of Egypt and Barclays Bank dominated and stabilized banking in Sudan. Abstract. This chapter turns attention toward the legacies of slavery and colonialism in the process of state formation in Sudan. It examines in particular the legacies of enslavement and the colonial policy of indirect rule in creating and shaping ethnic and racial identities in precolonial and colonial : Amir Idris.
