    Base ten blocks, spinners, geoboards, fraction circles These are all types of math manipulatives that teachers have readily available to help teach mathematical problem solving and reasoning. These physical objects help engage our learners through a hands-on approach. I love any and all hands-on activities.   Tier three books are books that are not necessarily written to focus on a specific math skill, but could easily be used to make connections to math. (I read about this classification in this post) In addition, some of the books make great early introductions for young kids (first or second grade), while others go much more in depth and begin.

      Are cute, whimsical, and artsy the adjectives that come to mind when planning to teach about improper fractions and mixed numbers? With inspiration from Ed Emberley’s drawing books and a helpful circle-punching tool, here’s how I disguise a rigorous fractions lesson with an open-ended art experience.. Step 1: Planning and Prepping for Fractions Circle Art. Rainbow Fraction Circles represent different fractions for instructive comparison. Teach students how to compare and construct fractions, work with mixed numbers, and add/subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators. Fraction circles represent a whole, halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths, tenths, and twelfths.
